Poor Knights Islands

The Poor Knights Islands aren't the most accessible of New Zealand's islands, with rugged terrain, sheer cliff faces and craggy inlets preventing easy landings. Fortunately, the islands are protected as natural reserves thus quelling the challenge to explore the land.

The surrounding waters are also protected as marine reserves but welcome visitors to scuba dive, snorkel, sail and fish with experienced tour operators. The diving at Poor Knights Island is famous in New Zealand and around the world.

To work out how to get to Poor Knights Island, which is located 24 kilometres off New Zealand’s north-eastern coastline, speak to tour companies in Tutukaka, the harbour town that acts as the gateway to the islands. Access Tutukaka by car, a 200 kilometre drive north of Auckland, or fly or bus it from Auckland to nearby Whangarei, 26 kilometres to the south-west of Tutukaka.

The Poor Knights Islands are worth the trip and will be one of the most adventurous and breathtaking sites on your New Zealand holiday.
